Hello Footballers…
The World Cup is reaching a fever "pitch" going into the Semi-finals (c'mon Germany) and last weekend my son and his team entered a local tournament. It turned out to be a big deal (they just thought they'd kick the ball around a bit) with the Mayor of Vancouver and local print and television media in attendance. They represented Slovakia (you had to pick a country and one of the members is from Slovakia plus it was a first time final appearance by the country in the World Cup tounament in South Africa).
They ended up playing 8 games over two days – crazy on their bodies and lost out in the semi-finals on penalty kicks. I think they were secretly happy to stop playing and head to the beer garden.
The weathe
r was also crazy – hot to cold, rain to sun, wind to freezing. That's Vancouver for you. Here's pictures of the two extremes – all in the same day!
The team was really on fire and Ian was a scoring machine (he has a torn MCL in his knee – see the tape job) and probably shouldn't have played but he ended up scoring 8 goals including one on a break away where he lost his shoe half way down to the goal. After he scored the opposing player brought him his shoe – very funny!
Now to the real World Cup…
I LOVE the fans – some are hysterical with their costumes. Here are a few from the England/Germany game last week. Their faces say it all don't they?
What were these fans thinking when they put these costumes on? One guy had the presense of mind to hide his face.
Won the war…lost the game.
I'm sure dressing up seems like a good idea BEFORE the game but wouldn't you hate to walk out of the stadium dressed like this?
They call soccer "The Beautiful Game" – is it the passing, strategy, fitness (an average player runs a marathon a game – 11KM!)? It really is the "beautiful game" and here's why….my favourite player Michael Ballack.
I'm just sayin'….makes you want to start watching football doesn't it?
Back soon with stamping stuff…
Alison
