Spotlight Technique with Hey Birthday Chick Bundle

February 19, 2021 by Alison Solven

Hey Chick Spotlight

How adorable is this little chick spotlighted to show her stuff? This reminds me of the Bugs Bunny cartoon opening or the Looney Toon episode with the singing frog who would sing when no one was around but when the spotlight hit he would just sit and croaks – who else remembers that episode? Am I dating myself?

So how do you make this card?

Measurements:

  • Highland Heather:
    Base – 4-1/4” x 11”; scored at 5-1/2”
    Banner – 1/2" x 3"
  • Purple Posy:
    Layer 1 – 4” x 5-1/4”
    Banner – 1/2" x 3"
  • Basic White:
    Layer 2 – 3-1/2” x 4-3/4”
    Spotlight – 3 1/2" x 4 3/4"
    Chick – 2" x 2
    Oval – 1-1/2” x 3”

Instructions:

  1. Fold the Highland Heather cardstock in half on the score mark to create card base.
  2. Emboss Purple Posy cardstock (layer 1) with Pinewood Planks Embossing Folder using the Stampin' Cut & Emboss Machine. Adhere to card base.
  3. Create a ‘spotlight mask’ using Basic White cardstock  Mark the center of the card on the top on the 3 1/2"" side. Then on the bottom of the same piece, mark 5/8” in from each side. Trim off from 5/8” to center mark on each side. Save scrap pieces.
  4. Lay ‘spotlight mask’ over center 2nd-piece Basic White cardstock and hold in place.
  5. Using Blending Brush, colour outside edges with Highland Heather until desired depth of colour is achieved. Repeat on opposite side of ‘spotlight mask’. Remove mask.
  6. Punch a small oval from the 1-1/2” x 3” Basic White CS using the Double Oval Punch.
  7. Using the ‘scrap’ Basic White cardtock pieces, mask over the Highland Heather sides of Basic White CS layer. Add the punched Oval at bottom of unmasked area.       Then using Blending Brush, lightly add the ‘spotlight’ using So Saffron ink and Crumb Cake ink at the bottom of the oval (creates a floor).
  8. Run the blended layer through the Stampin’ Cut & Embossing Machine with the Meadow Moments Embossing Folder just over the ‘highland heather’ blended sides.
  9. Stamp the ‘egg chick’ multiple times using stamped off Smoky Slate ink so they are ‘outside’ the spotlight circle.
  10. Adhere stamped/embossed layer to card front.
  11. Stamp ‘dancing chick’ on Basic White cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black ink. Die cut with coordinating Hey Birthday Chick dies.
  12. Color chick with Stampin’ Blends: Daffodil Delight Dark, Pumpkin Pie Dark, Highland Heather Light, Purple Posy Dark. Then colour ‘eggshell’ with Wink of Stella Glitter Brush. Add to card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  13. Die cut 1 banner from Purple Posy and another banner from Highland Heather cardstock. Add to card front using Mini Glue Dots.
  14. Fish with a Purple Posy bow from the Playing with Patterns Ribbon Combo.
